Vanda Blue Magic
A widely popular hybrid due to its stunning large violet-blue flowers, the Vanda Blue Magic is a species that requires plenty of sunlight during summer whereby it thrives best under warm and highly humid conditions. Based on its anatomy, it has thick leaves which fan out from spindly stems. Its flower stems arise where the stems and leaves join alongside with the growth of keikis. Size wise, it could reach approximately 60cm tall and up to 100cm together with its long aerial roots. Its foliage could also spread to approximately 40cm wide.
A rarity in the Vanda Orchid family, this species is found to be native in northeast India, China, Burma, and Thailand. Prized for its magnificent blue flowers marked with deep blue tessellation, the Vanda Coerulea is a native to higher elevations compared to most Vanda species and thrives best under intermediate to cool climates during winter period, where flowers are produced. It has a rare characteristic of producing branched inflorescences, an uncommon feature that transmits to its hybrids such as the famous Vanda Rothschildiana.
A rare Vanda species recognized for its waxy greenish white flowers produced during spring, the Vanda Denisoniana is native to Burma, Thailand and China. It has flat flowers with dark brown markings that are commonly utilized in hybridization. Compared to most Vanda species that are commonly fragrant during the middle of the day, the Vanda Denisoniana has an uncommon characteristic of producing fragrance only during the early evenings.
A glorious hybrid that has inherited the best qualities from parents, Vanda Coerulea and Euanthe sanderiana, the Vanda Rothschildiana grows approximately 10cm tall and produces large, pale violet-blue flowers that feature a beautiful deep purple lip. Interesting fact: Most hybrids of blue Vandas have Vanda Rothschildiana in their ancestry.
A species commonly found in Java that flowers during fall and winter, the Vanda Tricolor features magnificent purple-spotted white flowers with dark lilac lips that are prominent for its strongly reflexed segments, long pedicels and ovaries. Commonly identified to be related to the Philippine Vanda Luzonica, it is differentiated by its flamboyant spotting and strong fragrance.
A massive giant-sized epiphyte that is native from Burma through Indochina, China and Malaya, the Vandopsis gigantean is a cold-sensitive species that produces big, round flowers with pale yellow petals along with fleshy leaves. Featuring a relatively short inflorescence, these flowers have large brown spots that are seen as rings with lighter centres and are borne near the centre of the plant during late spring.
