The Merlion is a mythical creature that has the head of a lion and the body of a fish. The lion’s head depicts the folklore of Prince Sang Nila Utama’s discovery of the Lion City (Singapore’s original name was “Singapura”), whilst the fish’s tail represents Singapore's origin as a fishing village. This symbolic mythical creature was designed by Alec Fraser-Brunner as a logo for the Singapore Tourism Board in 1964. It went on to be sculpted by Mr Lim Nang Seng, who completed it in 1972. Today, the Merlion is an iconic national symbol, attracting hundreds of tourists to the Merlion Park each day.
