ION Orchard RISIS Store Overview
One can expect a multi-sensory spatial concept once they step into the store. Think sophistication and modern finishings that feels close to nature. With each interplay between light and furnishings, customers will be greeted with a pleasing palette of woody and minimalistic colours, matching the brand’s new visual identity and revealing craftsmanship at its finest. To engage all senses, the store will incorporate inviting floral scents to evoke a pleasant memory with every walk-in.
Design Concept: Bringing Stories to Life
RISIS is honoured to have Tung Ching Yew, Founder of SODA (Spirit of Design Analogy Pte Ltd), be the Spatial Design Consultant for this project. Using Fibonacci Theory as the design language, the store was completed with key materials that emulate nature, transmuting it into experiential moments.
This is applied across the store’s space planning, including how each jewellery wall divider is designed, creating visually appealing proportions in between placement of architectures.
To allow consumers better resonate with RISIS core identity, the store design was largely inspired by elements of nature. We explored using laminated textures that emulate organic materials including linen and timber to facilitate a soothing shopping experience, taking consumers one step closer to nature. The choice of materials blends in with the store theme seamlessly as we unveiled our wide range of nature-inspired jewellery. During launch week, we have also released the new Midori collection exclusively in-stores before it went live on RISIS.com.

Despite the disruptions presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, we maintained a great synergy with SODA and are proud to have overcome against all odds, with our envisions coming to life. In this new normal, we look forward to creating refreshing store experiences that enable meaningful consumer connections.

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND RISIS FLAGSHIP STORE?

When I first discovered that RISIS’ signature product, the Orchid Jewellery, were made from real orchids, I was struck in awe because every piece of the jewellery is non-identical yet designed to be the same product range. It leads me to be more appreciative of what nature has given to us and how design can transmute it into a meaningful narrative.
I began a journey to document the micro-observations of natural phenomenon such as the hierarchical structure of a tree, the echoism of flower petals, the accentuated markings on a nautilus shell, etc. These observations coincide with the Fibonacci Theory, a sequence discovered by a historical mathematician, Leonardo Bonacci (1180 - 1250). The Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical calculation found in nature's applications which starts with a one and proceeds based on the rule that the next number is equal to the sum of the preceding two numbers.
Therefore, the Fibonacci Theory serves as our design language throughout the entire design process of RISIS flagship store. It is used in the planning of display spaces, circulation walkways, built-in carpentry, and furniture designs. The outcome is an amazingly tranquil environment with attention focused on the product displays. It is further accentuated with meticulously planned lighting effects to compliment the materiality of the products.

HOW DOES THE MATERIAL SELECTION RELATE TO THE DESIGN DIRECTION?

The materials are chosen based on three key qualities that emulate nature. They are grains, tactility, and transmutation. Timber grains are presented in a subtle manner to compliment the environment. Stones with sedimentary grains brings us closer to the works of nature with its coarser tactility. The carpeted floor of the store is a representation of stone textures transmuted in another form of materiality.

MOST UNIQUE FEATURE OF THE STORE?

It has to be the product display wall at the rear end which transmuted the Fibonacci Theory as display compartments of varying sizes. There are also hidden product compartments designed within the store to create the sense of surprise for consumers in store.

WHAT MAKES A RETAIL STORE IMMERSIVE?

Every retail store carries a brand value and/or culture in them. It is important that the built environment design of the store amplify these cultures and values to allow consumers to immerse in them. User Experience (UX) in Spatial Design must be meticulously curated for consumers to immerse into the brand culture and values. If this experience is successfully executed, in turn, it will bond the consumers to the brand for a very long time.
